Kenny Gamble was honored at the Philadelphia Education Fund's 25th anniversary celebration, held Nov. 16 at Drexel University's Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center. Gamble, cofounder of Philadelphia International Records, is chairman of Universal Companies, which operates Philadelphia's Universal Institute Charter School and manages two Philadelphia public schools. Also given EDDY Awards were Helen Cunningham; A. Morris Williams Jr.; Widener University student Mohamed Kakay; Citi; and the Free Library of Philadelphia. The event for 250 guests raised $144,000 for the fund.

Doctors orders
More than 500 guests attended the Jefferson Awards Gala Oct. 26 at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott. The evening, which raised nearly $500,000 for Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals, honored Dr. Herbert Kean and his wife, Joyce, with the Award of Merit, and Dr. William S. Tasman with the Achievement Award in Medicine. Proceeds will support research in retinal degeneration and ophthalmology equipment upgrades at Wills Eye and the expansion and renovation of a surgical intensive care unit at Jefferson.

Guess who's coming for dinner?
Mt. Airy USA, a nonprofit community development organization, held its seventh annual benefit, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," Oct. 23 at the Commodore Barry Club in Mount Airy. Among the 275 guests were Jesse Biddle, the Phillies' 2010 first-round draft pick and Mount Airy resident, and film producer and director Tigre Hill (The Shame of a City). The dinner raised $25,000 to support community development projects in Mount Airy.

For a cure
Breast Health International, a division of the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health, held its 16th annual Black Tie Gala Oct. 29 at the Rittenhouse Hotel. Cochaired by Renee Freeman and Joan Spain, the benefit, formerly known as "Give the Shirt Off Your Back!", honored Neiman Marcus. Among the silent auction items was a designer sketch by Christian Louboutin that went for $1,000, as well as sketches by Carolina Herrera ($800) and Oscar de la Renta ($650). The evening for 220 guests raised $250,000 for breast cancer research and development.

Capitol idea
Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania held its 22d annual Fall Event & Auction Oct. 29 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The gala's 200 guests were entertained by the Washington-based comedy troupe Capitol Steps, which gave a one-hour performance. The benefit, cochaired by Kathy Putnam and Stephan Potts, raised more than $85,000 for the nonprofit's health care, education, and advocacy programs.
